Artist David aiu Servan-Schreiber working in his Planet series

I AM David Aiu Servan-Schreiber

I AM a visual artist

At MAM, we create beautifully made wood watches. We believe the only real growth is the one that is sustainable and respectful with our beloved planet and everyone who lives in it. Artist David aiu Servan-Schreiber strives to be one of those people who makes this world a better place. This London-based visual artist has exhibited in prestigious spaces such as Sotheby’s and the Frieze Art in New York, London, and Paris. His artwork addresses environmental topics such as deforestation and climate change. He is the latest artist to join the MAM I AM project.

We share with him a deep concern for sustainability. This is the reason why we asked him to be one of our ambassadors. We are in love with his artworks, as he is in love with our wood watches: "I see a real poetic aspect to my watch. A real piece of art. What I like most about MAM’s wood watches are their design and their ethical message. Both of those factors are key for me, and made me a true ambassador of the brand.”

With his “Planets” series, he takes a spiritual look at outer space. “'Planets' is a way for me to share my interpretation of religion.” David uses “paint on wood, as it is a material which comes straight from the ground”. He also uses gold leaves to highlight this particular collection, like Christian Orthodox believers do with their icons and “rusted metal wire as symbol of the wounds inflected by humans.”

“[Earth] is therefore the only thing in which humans can believe with absolute certainty. Essentially I paint then when I decide that the work is finished, I burn it as a symbol of the brutality and nonsense that deforestation is.” Deforestation is one of the ecological challenges our world is facing. At MAM, we use FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certificate wood, which warranties that the material we use to create our wood watches comes from sustainably managed forests - ecologically, economically, and socially.

David believes human existence is as much a part of nature as it is his consciousness. They aren’t two separate worlds. There isn’t a clear line drawn between our own little universe and then the planet; they are interconnected, each one informing the other. Maybe that’s why when you ask him to sum up his creative process in one sentence, he goes: “In planets we trust.”

“It is by looking at our environment through the same lenses which believers look at their religions that we can tame the fever from which our Earth currently suffers.” If we were able to see the world through David’s vision, we would get a real chance to face the world's numerous environmental challenges, to take action and heal the planet. It would only make sense that, when asked about the places he most prefers to spend time, he feels at home "anywhere outdoors, from a city, mountain, beach, or landscape." His reverence for nature is an integrated aspect of his everyday life.

“I don’t believe in talent. I believe in the combination of drive and time. Your talent is your capacity to never let go of your drive. Persistence and patience are keys to success.”

“Time is a kind of god. Time is what makes life happen. My next series after 'Planets' will be called 'Time.'"

David is one of the chosen ones. He is part of the pioneer MTart Agency, the first ever artist agency in the world founded by the extraordinary Marine Tanguy, with whom we had the honor of launching the I AM project.

The I AM project is an initiative curated by MAM intended to showcase the great talent of those who are making a positive impact through their hard work and inspire us every day.
